“It’s Showtime” Beetlejuice Wall-hanging

 A movie I’m truly fond of and has made it to my top three is Beetlejuice. It has everything you could ever want in a movie: the undead, starving sandworms and an obnoxious poltergeist played by the very talented Michael Keaton. Don’t you dare utter those three little words “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!”

It used to be one of those traditions to watch every Halloween, now it’s become one of those films I end up watching every month. And being a huge fan of Tim Burton films, I had to make a wall-hanging highlighting the characters and scenes.

I had the perfect spot in my art room. Little did I know it would inspire and become my very first quilted art piece and motivate more creations to come.

Starting with a rough sketch I planned out which characters I wanted to use and eventually stitch on the quilt. And YEP, I even made a tiny wool shrimp! That scene around the dinner table is hilarious. Catherine O’Hara and her guests possessed and unwillingly dancing to Harry Belafonte’s “Day-O”…classic!

I began making a template first, followed by determination to find fabric selection and wools I had in my stash.

Hand stitching and machine quilting with applique and paper piecing was my go-to for this quilt and a lot of it. I even made a 3-D spider complete with wire legs and water colored fabric.

My amazing and gifted momma helped with the applications of boarder pieces and the final block construction. Thanks mom, I couldn’t have done it without you.

The Beetlejuice quilt is now snug as a bug on the wall watching over me as I continue to create and sew. Just the beginning of what will be designed and stitched for many years to come…and the coolest part of the whole project is that I can share it with you. “I myself, am strange and unusual”…Dang straight I am!! And there’s no turning back. Next project here I come.
